Biography
I started road racing in 1957 with the BLRC in the Manchester area and was asked to join the mighty Mercury RC in 1959 where I enjoyed successes on track, TT and in road racing and stage racing at first cat level.
During 1968 my wife presented me with triplets and for few years I had to focus on my work and during this period I moved from the engineering shop floor through to eventually divisional director of a large global manufacturing company where I specialized in world class mfg methods and have lectured at several universities and at Sandhurst.
Since retiring I decided to pass on my cycling 'know how' and became a qualified British cycling club coach and currently I am proud to be a Senior coach and member of the ABCC national executive committee and organise cycle sportive events the Cumbrian Killer,Howgill Hammer and Dave Lloyd mega challenge[2008-9-2010].
The engineering `geek` in me has always searched for new solutions in training methods or equipment and through trial and error I believe I can help riders make the right decisions before going off to spend fortunes on new toys when usually easier and less costly ways are available and as a results my riders enjoy great successes [see testimonials]
I also know only too well the problems associated with balancing a family and sporting lifestyle with a demanding job and have refined my methods over many years in trying to find optimum solutions and I am confident I can help you.
Athletic background
As well as my cycling racing experiences I did for many years compete in fell racing ,orienteering [regional champ], marathon [2hrs 57min at Bolton age 45] and track running [34min 10km], swimming, triathlons and decathlons enjoying many successful years and even completing over 50 mountain marathons in Scotland, Wales ,England and Ireland.
Mountaineering has always been my other passion and apart from doing many long distance cycle randonees eg raid alpine and Pyrenees and being a life member of audax auk I have rock climbed, spent years doing many via ferrate routes in Italy and have lead walking groups across many routes in the alps and dolomites.
